What is Dragon Fruit?

Dragon fruit is a tropical fruit that grows on cactus. It grows on the Hylocereus cactus, whose flowers only bloom at night. It is also called pitaya, pitahaya or strawberry pear.

The two most common species have a bright red skin with green scales resembling a dragon. The plant is native to southern Mexico and Central America. Today it is cultivated all over the world.
